    Wood vs Plastic Cutting Board

a stack of cutting boards on a counter

Wood vs Plastic Cutting Boards, which is better? If you cook, you are going to need to cut things. That cutting is going to require a cutting board. What kind of cutting board should you use?

Dad will break down the cutting boards he uses and why he thinks you should follow his same "cutting board system".

What Is A Cutting Board System?

Dad uses a variety of cutting boards for different uses. However, Dad has 3 main cutting boards he uses on a regular basis. Each one has a specific use and was chosen for a reason, and they work as a system.

Wood For Your Main Cutting Board

Bamboo Cutting Board with a Knife on it

Dad's main cutting board is a Bamboo Board with a Drip Groove. Dad uses this board for most things. This is great for carving cooked meats, due to the drip groove. Overall Dad prefers wood cutting boards.

A good wood cutting board will help keep knives sharp. Since they are not too hard they are less likely to dull the blade, letting you sharpen less often.

Dad uses his wood cutting boards for cooked meats, vegetables and just about anything that isn't raw.

Dad does not recommend using wood cutting boards for raw meats because you can't run them through the dishwasher to sanitize them.

As you cut things you are also putting little cuts in the board. Particles get stuck in these cuts and can be hard to totally clean out.

    Go Plastic For Raw Meats

This is a semi-hard plastic board that would be found in lots of commercial kitchens. This cutting board is reserved for raw meats, and raw meats only.

Dad chooses to use these types of boards for raw items since it can go in the dishwasher to be sanitized after use. By keeping this as the only board used for raw items there is no chance for cross contamination.

Dad just believes it is a good practice to do things this way. Nobody wants to get sick, right?

Sometime You Need To Go Big

a large wood cutting board on a counter with a jar and a rolling pin

This is a cutting board that dad got from his mom. It is at least 20 years old and still in fantastic shape. Dad mainly uses this one for making doughs or baked goods.

Sometimes you just need a really big working surface. Even though you can roll pizza dough directly on your solid surface counters its nice to have a dedicated, cleanable space just for that task.

Dad has had some weird things end up on the kitchen counter so, It is safer to use a board.

Though, having a large cutting board gives you extra flexibility so you can chop something if you need to.

    Optional, Small "Cheese" Cutting Board

This one would be considered "optional" in Dad's book. You don't have to have one, but you will want one.

It comes in really handy when you only need to cut a piece of fruit or some cheese. It is nice to not have to clean the big board when you just cut a few strawberries.

    Stop Cutting Boards From Moving.

Now that you know what kind of cutting boards to use for what, let's make them safer. Cutting boards wiggle and move around on counter tops. It is dangerous and annoying. Dad has a simple "Dad Hack" to stop this from happening.
