Dad's Superman Sunday Steak

Dad's Superman Sunday Steak

Dad Got This attempts to recreate Superman's steak-cooking method, using a wireless thermometer to monitor the temperature of a massive Tomahawk steak. Following Henry Cavill's lead, the steak is smoked on a pellet grill and seared on a kamado grill for that perfect medium-rare finish.

Equipment

  • Pellet Grill (e.g., ZGrills)
  • Kamado Grill (or another high-heat grill)
  • Rontronic Wireless Thermometer
  • Smoker box and wood chips
  • Tongs
  • Meat thermometer
  • Avocado oil
  • Probe (for steak temperature tracking)

Ingredients

  • 3 lb Tomahawk Steak Cowboy Ribeye
  • Salt to taste
  • Garlic Powder to taste
  • Chili Powder to taste
  • Black Pepper optional
  • Avocado Oil for searing

Instructions

  • Prepare the Steak: Generously season the Tomahawk steak with salt, garlic powder, and chili powder. Optionally, add black pepper for extra flavor.
  • Let the steak rest at room temperature for 30 minutes, allowing the salt to penetrate. (For best results, dry brine the steak uncovered in the fridge overnight.)
  • Set Up the Grill: Preheat your pellet grill to the low smoke setting.
  • If extra smoke flavor is desired, use a smoker box filled with wood chips and place it on the grill next to the steak.
  • Monitor with Thermometer: Insert the Rontronic wireless thermometer probe into the thickest part of the steak.
  • Set the desired temperature to medium-rare (about120°F / 49°C).
  • Monitor the temperature of the steak and your cooker using the thermometer app.
  • Cook Low and Slow: Smoke the steak on the pellet grill for about 30 minutes. Then, increase the temperature to 225°F / 107°C to cook the steak until it reaches the target internal temperature of 120°F / 49°C.
  • Prep the Kamado Grill for Searing: About an hour into smoking, start your Kamado grill for high-heat searing. Wait until the charcoal is fully lit and blazing hot.
  • Just before searing, apply a thin layer of avocado oil to the steak to help form a crust.
  • Sear the Steak: Once the steak reaches the desired internal temperature, remove it from the pellet grill.
  • Sear it on the Kamado grill, over direct heat, until a deep, golden crust forms (about 1-2 minutes per side).
  • Rest the Steak: Let the steak rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Slice the steak off the bone, and then cut it against the grain.
  • Enjoy your Superman-inspired steak, juicy, tender, and full of smoky flavor!
