Cooking a steak is one thing, but cooking a steak like Superman?
That’s next level! Inspired by a viral Instagram post from Henry Cavill, who gave us a glimpse of his steak-cooking process, I decided to follow in his footsteps and give it a try.

The result? A beautifully smoked and seared 3-pound Tomahawk steak. And, of course, I couldn't have done it without the help of the Rongtronic Wireless Thermometer, which took the guesswork out of cooking this colossal piece of meat.
Why Superman’s Steak Stands Out
It’s not every day that a celebrity like Henry Cavill shows off their cooking skills. Superman, it seems, isn’t just saving the world—he’s also teaching us how to grill the perfect steak! While Cavill didn’t offer many details in his post, he mentioned two key elements: smoke and sear. He smoked his steak on a pellet grill and seared it on a kamado-style grill. Naturally, I had to follow suit, using my Z Grills pellet grill and trusty Kamado Joe.
The Magic of the Rongtronic Wireless Thermometer
One of the standout tools I used for this cook was the Rongtronic Wireless Thermometer. This gadget is a game-changer for anyone serious about grilling. It’s not just a meat thermometer—it also measures the ambient temperature of your grill. And with its advanced Bluetooth technology, I could monitor my steak’s progress from up to 800 feet away. This was perfect for when I wanted to relax inside while the steak cooked outside.
The thermometer is also IP67 water-resistant, meaning you can use it for sous vide, braising, or even deep frying. Plus, the dual sensor probe lets you track both your meat and the cooker’s temp, ensuring everything’s spot-on.
Preparing the Steak
For this Superman-inspired steak, I chose a massive Tomahawk ribeye. This cut, also known as a cowboy ribeye, is perfect for grilling due to its rich marbling and bone-in structure. For seasoning, I followed what I saw in Cavill’s post—simple and effective. A liberal coating of salt, garlic powder, and chili powder (with a bit of black pepper, because why not?) was all this beast of a steak needed.
A quick tip: if you have the time, dry brine the steak overnight in the fridge. This allows the salt to penetrate deeply, seasoning the steak inside and out. But if you’re short on time, letting it rest at room temperature for a bit will still get you great results.
Smoking the Steak
To infuse the steak with maximum smoky flavor, I set up a smoker box with wood chips in the pellet grill. The goal was to give the steak an extra kick of smoke that a standard pellet grill might not provide. After setting up the Rongtronic thermometer, I placed the steak on the smoker and monitored its progress from my dining room—no more running in and out of the house to check temps!
Searing to Perfection
Once the steak hit the desired internal temperature (I aimed for around 125°F or 52°C), it was time to sear. This is where the kamado grill came in. After throwing some fresh charcoal on the grill and cranking up the heat, I gave the steak a beautiful, flame-kissed sear. A quick brush of avocado oil on the steak helped achieve that perfect crust.
The Final Result
After a 10-minute rest, it was finally time to slice into this Superman-worthy steak. The results? Smoky, juicy, and tender with a perfectly seared crust. The steak was packed with flavor, and the Rongtronic thermometer made it easy to hit that perfect medium-rare doneness. If Superman approves, I’m sold!
Conclusion
Recreating Superman’s steak was an exciting and delicious experiment. The Rongtronic Wireless Thermometer proved to be an essential tool, allowing me to monitor both the steak and grill temperatures effortlessly. Whether you’re cooking a massive Tomahawk steak or something smaller, this thermometer has got you covered. Plus, with its IP67 water-resistant rating and dual sensor probe, you can use it for a variety of cooking techniques.

Recipe
Dad's Superman Sunday Steak
Equipment
- Pellet Grill (e.g., ZGrills)
- Kamado Grill (or another high-heat grill)
- Rontronic Wireless Thermometer
- Smoker box and wood chips
- Tongs
- Meat thermometer
- Avocado oil
- Probe (for steak temperature tracking)
Ingredients
- 3 lb Tomahawk Steak Cowboy Ribeye
- Salt to taste
- Garlic Powder to taste
- Chili Powder to taste
- Black Pepper optional
- Avocado Oil for searing
Instructions
- Prepare the Steak: Generously season the Tomahawk steak with salt, garlic powder, and chili powder. Optionally, add black pepper for extra flavor.
- Let the steak rest at room temperature for 30 minutes, allowing the salt to penetrate. (For best results, dry brine the steak uncovered in the fridge overnight.)
- Set Up the Grill: Preheat your pellet grill to the low smoke setting.
- If extra smoke flavor is desired, use a smoker box filled with wood chips and place it on the grill next to the steak.
- Monitor with Thermometer: Insert the Rontronic wireless thermometer probe into the thickest part of the steak.
- Set the desired temperature to medium-rare (about120°F / 49°C).
- Monitor the temperature of the steak and your cooker using the thermometer app.
- Cook Low and Slow: Smoke the steak on the pellet grill for about 30 minutes. Then, increase the temperature to 225°F / 107°C to cook the steak until it reaches the target internal temperature of 120°F / 49°C.
- Prep the Kamado Grill for Searing: About an hour into smoking, start your Kamado grill for high-heat searing. Wait until the charcoal is fully lit and blazing hot.
- Just before searing, apply a thin layer of avocado oil to the steak to help form a crust.
- Sear the Steak: Once the steak reaches the desired internal temperature, remove it from the pellet grill.
- Sear it on the Kamado grill, over direct heat, until a deep, golden crust forms (about 1-2 minutes per side).
- Rest the Steak: Let the steak rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat.
- Serve and Enjoy: Slice the steak off the bone, and then cut it against the grain.
- Enjoy your Superman-inspired steak, juicy, tender, and full of smoky flavor!
