Dad's Honey & Brown Sugar Glazed Spiral Sliced Ham Recipe is his go-to holiday dish. This ham is on the sweet side since it is cooked with cherry coke in the pan and topped with pineapple.
Don't worry about all the sweetness, it is mainly on the exterior.

You are just warming the ham
Making a spiral sliced ham is really easy. You are in fact warming it more than cooking it. You can actually eat it cold right out of the package if you wanted to.
Even though this seems like it would be really sweet it is not. Since the sweet glaze is just on the exterior you only end up getting small portions of it in each bite. The sweetness compliments the saltiness of the ham perfectly.
If you have a family that can take the heat you can always add some cayenne pepper to the mix and kick it up a notch! Sweet, salty and heat go great together.
Score the ham
Dad likes to add some diagonal scores to the ham to give it a nice look and also let some of the spices penetrate the exterior. Only go about ½ inch deep so you don't end up cutting through the slices.
Once that is done go ahead and coat the ham with the juices from the pineapple. The next step is to sprinkle the ham with brown sugar & cinnamon and drizzle honey all over it.
Pineapple and Ham go perfectly
These two are a match made in heaven. All you need to do is secure your pineapple with some toothpicks and you are good to go! The last step is to pour your can of soda in the pan to help create steam and juices for the ham to cook in.
Seal the ham & cook on low
Since you are only warming the ham the key is to keep the temp low and to seal it in tin foil to almost steam it. This will help keep it juicy and not dry it out.
You cook the ham in a 275-degree oven for 12-15 minutes per pound. If you cooked it at a higher temp like 350, it would dry the ham out.
A sweet sticky glaze
After the ham has finished warming, remove it from the oven and bump the temp up to broil. Most hams come with their own packaged glazes but Dad prefers to make his own from the juices the ham cooks in.
This seems to tie the flavors together nicely. Put a pan over medium heat and combine the juices from the ham, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and honey. Simmer it until it reduces in thickness enough to be able to coat a spoon. This takes about 6-8 minutes.
Pour that glaze all over the ham and return it to the oven uncovered until the exterior begins to brown. Be careful and watch this as it can go from beautiful to burnt really fast.
When you have a color you are happy with take the ham out and rest if for at least 15 minutes to let the juices redistribute.
This is always a hit at every holiday event in the Dad Got This Family.
Honey, Brown Sugar & Cinnamon Glazed Spiral Sliced Ham Recipe
Equipment
- Large Baking Pan
- Toothpicks
- Saute Pan
- Oven
- Aluminim Foil
Ingredients
- 10 lb Bone-in spiral-sliced ham
- 1 Can Sliced Pineapple in juices
- 1 Can Cherry Coke Coke or Dr Pepper will also work.
- 1 Cup Brown Sugar
- 2 tablespoon Ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoon Honey
- ½ Stick Butter
Instructions
For the Ham
- Place the ham flat side down in a large baking pan and score the ham diagonally with a sharp knife.
- Open the can of pineapple and pour the juice on top of the ham.
- Sprinkle the ham with a mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon. Dad used his handy dandy spice shaker and mixed up ¼ cup of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon.
- Drizzle honey all over the top of the ham and then place the pineapple slices on the ham. Secure them with toothpicks.
- Sprinkle a little more of the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture on the ham coating the pineapple slices too.
- Pour one can of coke in the pan.
- Tent the ham tightly with tin foil and place it in a preheated 275-degree oven for 12-15 minutes a pound. For Dad's ham it was 3 hours.
For the Glaze
- When the time on the ham is done take the ham out of the oven and bump the temp up to broil.
- In a large pot or saucepan add ½ cup of the liquid from the ham, ½ cup of brown sugar, ½ a stick of butter, ½ tablespoon of cinnamon and ½ tablespoon of honey. Cook on a low simmer until it reduces and thickens enough to coat a spoon. It took about 6-8 minutes for Dad.
- Pour the glaze all over the top of the ham making sure you coat it as best as possible.
- Return the ham uncovered to the oven on broil. Make sure you watch it closely because it can easily burn. You are just looking to caramelize the glaze and get a nice color on the ham. Remove the ham when you are happy with the color.
- Let the ham rest for 15 minutes to help keep it juicy when you slice it.
